Kamakura, in Kanagawa Prefecture, about an hour south of Tokyo, is rich in ancient Japanese history and culture. It was Japan’s political capital and the birthplace of the first military government, and Kamakura was so important in Japanese history that it has its own period.
In modern times, Kamakura is still significant in Japan as one of the most popular tourist destinations, with numerous temples, shrines, artifacts, and the famous bronze national treasure, the Great Buddha statue.
